The Ebola virus, which causes a deadly hemorrhagic fever, has surfaced for the second time in less than two years in south-central Congo, where there have been 36 suspected cases, 12 of them fatal. Only three cases have been proved by laboratory tests to be caused by Ebola, and because other infectious diseases also affect the region, the true number of cases is not known. But in the meantime, health workers are keeping a close watch on 184 people who may have been infected.
