WELD COUNTY — A man going through the personal effects of his grandfather on Friday found a Korean War-era mortar shell that was later destroyed by the Northeast Regional Bomb Squad.

The man was sorting through his grandfather’s war memorabilia in the 3400 block of 34th Street Road when he discovered the shell, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

The man’s brother, an active-duty military member home for the holidays, thought the shell was live and should be destroyed.

The family alerted the Greeley Police Department and the bomb squad destroyed it, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
