A man going through the personal effects of his grandfather on Friday found a Korean War-era mortar that was later destroyed by the Northeast Regional Bomb Squad, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said today.
The man was sorting through his grandfather’s war memorabilia in the 3400 block of 34th Street Road in Weld County when he discovered the mortar, according to a news release.
The man’s brother, an active-duty military member home for the holidays, thought the mortar was live and should be destroyed.
The family alerted the Greeley Police Department and the bomb squad responded, taking it from the home and destroying it “in a safe location,” the release said.
