Yeti Imperial Stout by Great Divide Brewing Co. $6.98 per 22-ounce bottle
Happy new beer! With the turn of the calendar comes prime season for big, complex beers. Yeti pours black and thick enough to remind of Granny’s coffee on “The Beverly Hillbillies.” The head, typical of an imperial stout, is chocolate-mousse-like in color and texture, receding into rockiness and then a thin layer of brown foam that follows the brew to the bottom of the glass. The aroma yields roasty coffee, cocoa and rich caramel malt, but there’s little malt sweetness on the tongue, as the former pair take over in the mouth, with a wisp of alcohol. Yeti, with a warming 9.5 percent alcohol by volume, finishes with a hard bitter kick that hastens the next sip.
