Take this for what it’s worth, but the Broncos have been equal opportunity interviewers.
By bringing in Todd Bowles of the Dolphins for an interview today, the Broncos’ list of seven head coaching candidates includes three African-Americans. Other minority candidates were Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who interviewed Monday, and Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who interviewed Wednesday.
During the 2002 season, roughly 67 percent of NFL players were black, yet only two of the 32 head coaching jobs were filled by African-Americans — Tony Dungy and Herm Edwards.
Facing heavy criticism and possible legal action by affirmative action groups, the NFL adopted the Rooney Rule in December 2002 that required clubs seeking a new head coach to include at least one minority candidate.
The rule was named after Pittsburgh owner Dan Rooney, who was then leading the league’s diversity committee.
