DENVER—The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into allegations that Rep. David Balmer of Centennial was involved with a lobbyist in an attempt to influence Balmer’s race for House minority leader.

The committee of three Democrats and two Republicans on Wednesday requested phone logs, e-mails and other information before deciding whether to convene a formal hearing.

House Minority Leader Mike May, a Republican from Parker, filed a complaint against Balmer after learning there may have been an attempt to influence the selection of May’s successor as minority leader.

May had planned to resign from the Legislature for business reasons. He withdrew his resignation amid allegations that a lobbyist promised campaign contributions to Republicans who supported Balmer.

Balmer denied the allegations and the lobbyist told lawmakers he was acting on his own.
