Colorado U.S. Attorney Troy Eid announced Wednesday that he will resign the day before a new president is inaugurated and will run for attorney general in 2010.

Eid will first rejoin the private firm Greenberg Traurig, where he worked from 2003 to 2006. Attorney General John Suthers is expected to seek either the governor’s office or a U.S. Senate spot in 2010.

Eid had expressed interest in the Senate and the governorship but said he decided the attorney-general position was a better fit.

“I want to go where I can make a difference,” he said.

Eid was expected to resign because of the leadership changes in Washington.

“No one asked me to leave,” he said and pointed to a Frank Sinatra hit. “I did it my way. I am going out the way I want to go out.”
