VAIL, Colo.—Interstate 70 is reopening over Vail Pass after a shutdown for avalanche control.

The 10,700-foot pass was closed Wednesday morning so highway crews could trigger avalanches to prevent them from catching drivers unaware.

The state Department of Transportation says the pass is being reopened in stages and traffic is expected to move slowly.

Blowing snow and icy, snowpacked roads have prompted crews to close U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass and U.S. 40 over both Berthoud and Rabbit Ears passes.
