The national rankings did not hold up as the No. 14 University of Denver women’s gymnastics team outpointed visiting No. 11 Nebraska 194.350-194.125 on Saturday at the Pioneer Alumni Classic Meet, which featured a special appearance by Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin and her father, Valeri, at Hamilton Gymnasium.

DU’s Louise Mercer and Nikki Brown tied with Nebraska’s Kylie Stone for first on the uneven bars with scores of 9.8 points.

Stone also tied for first in the floor exercise with DU’s Amanda Johnson (9.825). There was another tie for first on the beam, with DU’s Jessica Lopez and the Huskers’ Tricia Woo posting meet-high 9.9s.

14ers win on the road.

The Colorado 14ers rallied from a 19-point, second-quarter deficit for a 107-101 win over the host Austin Toros. Joe Dabbert led the 14ers with 22 points, and Eddie Gill added 20.

Mavericks split with CC.

Colorado College couldn’t solve Minnesota State backup goaltender Dan Tormey — making only his second start of the season — as he stopped 27-of-28 shots in a 3-1 Tigers’ loss at the World Arena. Stephen Schultz got the lone goal for CC as the teams split the weekend series.

Eagles rally to beat Rage.

Riley Nelson and Greg Pankewicz scored in the shootout for the Colorado Eagles as they beat the in-state rival Rocky Mountain Rage 6-5 in Central Hockey League action at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

The Rage had a 3-1 lead after the first period, getting power-play goals from Jarred Mohr, Tyler Butler and Domenic Maiani. The Eagles tied it at three in a 16-second span early in the second period on goals by Ryan Tobler and Scott Polaski. The Rage went up 5-3 on a short-handed goal by Brent Cullaton and a power-play tally by Scott Wray. Pankewicz brought the Eagles to within a goal at the 15:52 mark of the second, then tied it at 4:36 of the third on a man-advantage goal with assists by Konrad Reeder and Ed McGrane.
