VAL DI FIEMME, Italy—Magnus Moan of Norway edged compatriot Jan Schmid to win a Nordic combined World Cup event Sunday and move into second place in the standings ahead of American Bill Demong.
Moan won in 27 minutes, 33.1 seconds, with Schmid finishing in 27:37.2.
The Americans struggled in the jumping portion of the event, leaving them a lot of ground to make up in the 10-kilometer cross-country race.
Demong, of Vermontville, N.Y., finished 14th, and Johnny Spillane of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was the top U.S. finisher, placing ninth after posting the second fastest ski leg.
Bryan Fletcher, also of Steamboat Springs, finished 26th and Brett Camerota of Park City, Utah, was 30th to put all four U.S. athletes in the points.
Anssi Koivuranta of Finland leads the World Cup standings with 643 points, followed by Moan with 556 and Demong of the United States with 515.
