Getting your player ready...

Just say, “YES!”

Perhaps you could even make it a resolution for the new year — to say yes to sharing the thrills you’ve enjoyed from the athletic achievements of your son or daughter, brother or sister, niece or nephew, granddaughter or grandson.

This month, The Denver Post is launching “Youth Excellence in Sports,” which will honor an individual or team that has excelled in any athletic endeavor unaffiliated with the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Specifically, we’re looking to salute Colorado’s youth who compete for the love and passion of the game, but might not receive the recognition their older siblings do.

Here’s how YES! will showcase the talents of your favorite youngster:

• Throughout the year, The Post sports department will collect and evaluate submissions of any outstanding athletic accomplishment for each month. These submissions are restricted to achievements occurring that particular month.

• Athletes must be 17 or younger and reside in Colorado. In case you’re wondering if your 11-year-old daughter, or as you boastfully call her, the next Nastia Liukin, winning a regional gymnastics tournament in Arizona would qualify, the answer is YES! The same goes for hockey teams competing in Canada, a marathon runner going the distance in Chicago, a baseball team becoming a big hit in Texas or a swimmer making a huge splash in Florida.

• The individual athlete or team selected as the top performer of the month will have a photograph appear in The Post sports section at the beginning of the following month, as well as on our website. A description of the feat will accompany a picture and short bio of the player or a roster of the team. Winners also will receive a certificate of achievement from The Post.

• At the end of the year, an overall winner will be selected from the 12 monthly honorees and a special prize will be awarded.

• To enter, visit and complete a brief description of the achievement with name of athlete or team, age(s), e-mail address and phone number. Or fax your submission to 303-866-9004 (Attention: “Youth Excellence.”)
