DOUGLAS COUNTY — Douglas County will cut library service at every location and not build a new library in Parker because of the tight economy.

Each library in the system will cut eight hours a week, a savings of about $600,000 a year. Library services in Louviers and Cherry Valley will close in June. Also, a hiring freeze will be implemented, and the materials budget will be reduced by $275,000.

The goal is to reduce expenses by 7 percent to 10 percent over the next 1 1/2 years. The library board approved the initial cost-savings plan this month. A final presentation of the cuts and options will be forwarded to the board at 7 p.m. March 19 at the Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock.
