DENVER—The Colorado Department of Transportation says it temporarily closed down three sections along Interstate 70 and U.S. 40 while crews set off avalanches to clear snow hanging precariously on slopes next to the road.

CDOT says Vail and Berthoud passes were temporarily closed Tuesday, as well as the Eisenhower Tunnel. The National Weather Service says between 6 to 10 inches fell in those areas along the Continental Divide in the last 24 hours and areas in Summit County had more.

CDOT spokeswoman Stacy Stegman says one of the avalanches that was triggered was about 100 feet long and as much as five feet deep.

Meteorologist Kyle Fredin says winds were strong so snow totals were hard to measure.
