Denver Public Schools will start its next school year Aug. 19, the school board decided Thursday night. The board still must decide on the complete school calendar for the 2009-10 school year — which will include days off for students, late-start days and early-release days.

Only one board member, Jeannie Kaplan, voted against the start date, saying that schools should begin later in the year because about half of the buildings have no air conditioning in the classrooms.
