The University of Colorado women’s tennis team opened its spring home schedule Saturday with a 5-2 loss to No. 26-ranked Louisiana State.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 57, played the Tigers without injured Monica Milewski. CU junior Melisa Esposito battled the Tigers’ No. 1 singles player, fifth-ranked Megan Falcon, and lost 6-2, 7-5.

CU (1-1) got its points from Abbie Probert and Michala Hedelund Jensen at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Each won in straight sets.

CHL’s Eagles hurdle Wichita.

Aaron Schneekl scored a goal and added an assist and Konrad Reeder scored the winning goal as the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League defeated Wichita 2-1 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

The Eagles were strong on defense as Morgan Cey stopped 34 shots. They didn’t allow a goal until the third period and the penalty-killing unit was perfect, not allowing the Thunder a goal on nine chances.

Odessa routs Rage.

With a 4-1 loss to Odessa at the Broomfield Event Center, the CHL’s Rocky Mountain Rage suffered its first regulation defeat in nine games.

Brent Cullaton tallied the lone goal for Rocky Mountain. The Rage gave up three power-play goals.

CU’s Chip nation’s top mascot.

Ralphie the Buffalo gets all the attention during football season, but Colorado’s “other” mascot, Chip, grabbed the limelight Friday at the College and Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships in Orlando, Fla., winning the mascot national title over nine other candidates.

Chip’s first national championship came after three top-10 finishes.

Trailing Chip in the top five were Aubie of Auburn, Goldy Gopher of Minnesota, Sparty of Michigan State and Smokey of Tennessee.
