An exceptional exhibition of rare mountain maps opens Friday at the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden.
Titled “On High, the Cartography of Topography,” the exhibition is drawn primarily from the collection of Wes Brown, a prominent Denver map collector.
“If you’re looking for a rare map and can’t find it, map experts will say, ‘You should check the Smithsonian, the (National) Geographic and check with Wes Brown in Denver,’ ” museum director Jake Norton said. “He’s at that level. His collection is unbelievable.”
The exhibition, which runs through May 31, will include a map from the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Zebulon Pike’s map of the exploration of the Southwest.
“Some of the things he’s loaning us for this exhibit are just phenomenal,” Norton said, including “an almost pristine copy of the 1870 Hayden survey.”
Check it out: The museum opens at 10 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday, closing at 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 6 p.m. the other days. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children.
