AVALANCHE AWARENESS

Feb. 5-8

Level 1 avalanche course; by Alpine World Ascents; at Boulder/Berthoud Pass; two nights, two full days (24 hours with classroom and field sessions); includes course booklet, field book, snow saw and certificate of completion; other dates are Feb. 26-March 1 and March 19-22; $295.

Feb. 7

Beacon Bowl and Avalanche Awareness Day at Arapahoe Basin; compete in timed trials to find a buried beacon the fastest; spectators can test avalanche gear and attend clinics; raffle, silent auction; proceeds benefit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.888-250-4428

    Winter Bike to Work Day in Boulder; inaugural event encourages commuters to give winter riding a try; several breakfast stations for participants; prizes include studded snow tires for your bike (donated by Community Cycles) and travel mugs (donated by Pedestrian Shops).

  •  Road rides each weekend in the south Denver area hosted by the Highlands Ranch Cycling Club; intermediate to advanced; two to five hours; helmet required; free.
