KARVAL, Colo.—Fire crews in the eastern Colorado county of Lincoln have contained a wildfire that blacked thousands of acres of grassland and destroyed several barns and sheds.

County sheriff’s communications supervisor Zane Nestor says no one has been hurt and no homes have been destroyed by the wildfire near the town of Karval (CAR-vel), about 100 miles southeast of Denver.

Sustained winds of 40 mph pushed the 5-mile-wide fire line south some 15 miles. But Nestor says fire crews from eight agencies have been able to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Nestor says firefighters saved one home from the flames and were dousing hot spots in trees and barns late Monday.

Crews from Karval, Limon, Edison, Olney Springs, Sugar City and other agencies battled the blaze.

Fire crews also contained a 10-acre wildfire west of Berthoud, or about 30 miles north of Denver. That fire was fanned by strong winds and burned the side of a barn.
