About 14,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into the South Platte River on Wednesday, but crews were able to contain it.
The water spewed from a treatment plant of the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District near 64th Avenue and York Street in Denver.
Crews were able to build a berm around the area and pump the water back to the plant for treatment.
The water was being tested for bacteria, and downstream water users were notified, said Steve Frank, spokesman for the district.
The amount of untreated water that got out was “very small,” he said.
It was diluted by about 240,000 gallons of river water rushing by, Frank said.
The 14,000 gallons is about 1/100th of 1 percent of the total amount of wastewater treated there daily — which is 140 million gallons.
