Utility bills. With the average annual utility bill for a U.S. home totaling $1,900, Danny Lipford, host of “Today’s Homeowner” and home- improvement contributor for “The Early Show,” has suggestions for cutting back.
Keep it tight. Check the exterior perimeter of your home for cracks and holes, especially the areas around windows and doors. Put weatherstripping around doors that may be worn down or damaged and install outlet gaskets to create an air-tight seal. Use a caulking gun and quality exterior caulk for cracks and gaps around windows.
Insulate windows. If you can’t purchase new windows to replace drafty ones, apply an insulation kit. Attach the film and use a hair dryer to shrink- wrap the film to the existing windows. Look for kits that include high-quality tape so the film doesn’t fall off mid-season.
Change the furnace filter at the start of every season to help heating and cooling systems run more efficiently and last longer. Use a high- efficiency filter such as a Filtrete Advanced Allergen Filter to remove pollen, smoke, dust mites and pet dander from the air.
