ARVADA — Senior Pierce Hornung, an All-Colorado selection last season by The Denver Post, scored a game-high 20 points Wednesday night as the Mustangs handled the Tigers in Class 5A Jefferson County.
Hornung, who has signed to play next season at Colorado State, led 10 Ralston Valley players who scored. Taylor Gillach added 11 points for the Mustangs (12-2 overall, 5-0 in league), ranked No. 8 in The Denver Post/9News 5A poll.
Jordan Jensen’s 17 points and 12 by Mickey Grant paced Lakewood (1-13, 0-4).
Arapahoe 53, Mullen 32
Tim Billingsley’s 15 points lifted the Warriors past the host Mustangs in the 5A Centennial.
Arapahoe, back in the Centennial for the first time since the mid-1980s, improved to 9-5, 3-2, in holding Mullen to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters. Kevin Wallace added nine points, all on 3-pointers.
Mullen (6-7, 3-2) was led by Uriah Carter’s eight points.
Eaglecrest 73, Cherokee Trail 48
CENTENNIAL — Josh Turner’s 16 points paced the No. 3 Raptors over the Cougars in the 5A Centennial.
Eaglecrest (12-2, 5-0) also had 13 points from senior forward Gage Wooten and 11 from Andre Marquez. The Raptors rolled with a 25-point second quarter.
For Cherokee Trail (9-5, 1-4), Austin Evans scored 12 and Kendall Gregory-McGhee had 11.
Mullen 70, Arapahoe 48
CENTENNIAL — The Mustangs’ balanced scoring led to a dominating girls victory over the Warriors as well as control of the Centennial League.
Mullen, ranked No. 2 in 4A, improved to 11-3, 5-0. Kirsten Hess and Hayley Thompson led the way with 11 points apiece. Six others scored at least six points, including nine each by Katie Crump, Laura Palmere and Jordan Scott-Benson.
For Arapahoe (11-2, 4-1), Becky Bowman scored 17 and Amy Barczuk eight.
Rampart 5, Valor Christian 4
AIR FORCE ACADEMY — One week after Fountain Valley pulled off the ice hockey stunner of the year at AFA’s Cadet Ice Arena by knocking off Lewis-Palmer, something similar almost happened.
Rampart (10-4) rallied twice, including in the third period, against winless Valor Christian (0-13) for an overtime victory.
Vince Pratt scored the equalizer with less than two minutes to play in regulation, then netted the game-winner in overtime.
Valor Christian goaltender Michael Porter made 52 saves, and Michael Schoolcraft had a hat trick.
