EVERGREEN, Colo.—A tractor-trailer rig has plowed into a herd of elk on Interstate 70 in the mountains west of Denver, killing 16 animals.

Authorities say the collision early Friday triggered two rollovers, but no humans were injured.

Crews had to use snowplows and water trucks to clear away the carcasses. The accident was about 25 miles west of Denver.

Eastbound lanes were closed between Evergreen and Idaho Springs for more than two hours, reopening at 3:30 a.m.
