The cross country accolades of Evan Appel continue to mount. The senior at Dakota Ridge has been named Gatorade’s runner of the year, also citing his outstanding academic and character prowess. Appel won two Class 5A championships, was third in national regional qualifying in the Midwest and took sixth at the Foot Locker Championships. “Evan is just extremely talented and hardworking,” Dakota Ridge head coach Mike Callor said. “When you put those two together, it makes life pretty easy for a coach. He sets his goals high, and when he started out training, he wanted to be the national champion. . . . He didn’t quite get there, but I think he was pleased with the result.”
