BOYS BASKETBALL

Lights outshine Tigers

Terrance Brockman and Joel Haywood each scored 19 points Saturday afternoon as Denver Lutheran needed overtime to handle visiting Holy Family 75-69.

The Lights (10-0 overall) outscored the Tigers 12-6 in the extra session to move to 5-0 and stay tied with Faith Christian atop the Class 3A Metropolitan League. They are No. 3 in The Denver Post/9News 3A poll.

David Beach (16 points) and Trevor Williams (12), headed to Colorado State University next season, led the Lights. Holy Family (5-7, 2-3) got a game-high 27 points by Anthony Guzman and 23 by Steven Millard.

Faith does in Devils

Stephen Dennis’ 21 points pushed Faith Christian, top-ranked in 3A, to 11-0 overall as the Eagles downed No. 10 Kent Denver 70-53 in the Metropolitan League.

Hayden Loudenslager (14) and Deron Rindels (10) also powered the Eagles. The Sun Devils (9-3, 4-2) were led by Max Wiepking’s 21 points and 13 by Spencer Dunlap.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Holy Family rebounds

Dori Gills’ 14 points led four Holy Family players in double figures as the defending 3A state champion Tigers whipped Lutheran 72-53 in the Metropolitan League.

Four days after being knocked off by Bishop Machebeuf, the No. 3 Tigers moved to 11-1, 5-1. Lutheran is 6-5, 2-3.

ICE HOCKEY

Summit tops Peak

Alex Gutierrez’s second goal of the afternoon was the game-winner as Summit downed Peak to Peak 4-3 at West Arena in Breckenridge.

The Tigers improved to 11-2-1. Gutierrez scored at 9:02, assisted by Shamus O’Neill and George Lowery. Gutierrez scored a short-handed goal in the second period.

Shay Longtain had tied the game earlier in the third period on the power play for Peak to Peak (6-5).

WRESTLING

Baca County is tops

Baca County placed nine competitors in the top four spots to win the Kiowa Invitational.

John Rodriguez (119 pounds), Thomas Forgey (152) and Cory Roberts (heavyweight) won their weight classes.

Baca County tallied 143 team points, followed by Burlington (131.5) and Simla (129.5).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Raiders rule Aurora pool

At the Hinkley pool, Rangeview’s girls won six events to take the Aurora Public Schools Championship.

The Raiders totalled 427 points to outlast Gateway 427-278. Hinkley had 207 and Aurora Central 198.

Jenna Haynes (200- and 500-yard freestyles), Abby Virgin (200 individual medley) and Darla Avis (100 backstroke) took firsts for the Raiders, as did their 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
