CAIRO, EGYPT — Hamas officials in Cairo are proposing a year-long truce with Israel and an opening of the crossings into the Gaza Strip.
Hamas official Ayman Taha has told reporters in Cairo that his delegation rejected an Israeli proposal — put forward by Egyptian negotiators — for an 18-month truce with a partial opening of the border.
Instead, Taha says the group made a counteroffer of a year which they now must discuss with their leadership in Damascus.
The Hamas delegation was in Cairo today meeting with Egypt’s intelligence chief to discuss the truce, border crossings and reconstruction efforts.
Israel launched a 22-day-long assault to stop Hamas rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, killing 1,300 Palestinians.
