DENVER—Two Denver television stations have reached an agreement to share the use of a helicopter in newsgathering activities, but say they’ll keep reporter assignments and editorial decisions separate.

KMGH-TV and KUSA-TV announced the agreement Tuesday. KMGH is an ABC affiliate owned by New York-based The McGraw-Hill Companies, while KUSA is an NBC affiliate owned by McLean, Va.-based Gannett Co.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether either of the station’s helicopters would be permanently grounded.

KUSA general manager Mark Cornetta says there’s an economic benefit to flying one helicopter, calling it “our most effective newsgathering tool.” His counterpart at KMGH, Byron Grandy, predicts other stations will follow their lead.

The agreement begins Feb. 1.
