CREEDE, Colo.—Former Mineral County Sheriff Phil Leggit has been hospitalized for hypothermia and frostbite after he was stranded outside overnight in 24-degree weather.

Current Sheriff Fred Hosselkus says the 67-year-old Leggit apparently slipped on ice and fell between 12:30 and 1 a.m. Saturday in Creede and wasn’t found until 10:30 a.m.

Hosselkus says Leggit ended up behind a wall at a construction site but didn’t break any bones.

Leggit was taken to Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday.
