ELKO, Nev.—Newmont Mining Corp. says it is cutting 38 positions in Nevada because of the economy.
Newmont spokeswoman Mary Korpi said about 20 employees likely will be offered severance packages and the remainder will be reassigned to other positions within the company.
The reductions, which are both in the operations department and support services groups, will most impact employees from the Elko and Carlin areas. Korpi says all the employees are salaried and span from professional to supervisor through manager.
The Denver-based gold mining company employs about 3,600 people in Nevada.
