DENVER—Colorado Secretary of State Bernie Buescher has announced a new voter-registration rule aimed at ensuring voters have a valid address.
Under state law, people applying to vote are not listed as registered voters if election notices mailed to them are returned as undeliverable within 20 days of the person applying. The law is meant to prevent voter fraud by requiring confirmation of an applicant’s address.
The new rule will have counties send a forwardable mailing to potential voters so they can correct or confirm addresses and become registered.
Last year, watchdog groups filed a lawsuit challeging the legality of the 20-day voter cancellation law.
The new rule, announced Friday, is being adopted temporarily. It will undergo a review and public hearing in March.
