LONE TREE — Lone Tree Police are commending a cab driver for quick thinking and a calm demeanor in escaping a potentially violent situation Friday morning.

After being threatened with a knife by a male passenger whom police later identified as 21-year-old Daniel Culberson, the unidentified driver “de-escalated the situation to the point that he talked the suspect into exiting the cab.”

Culberson was taken into custody and transported to Douglas County jail on charges that included attempted first-degree assault and menacing with a deadly weapon. Police said he was also in possession of a loaded handgun and several other weapons that weren’t specified in a news release by Lone Tree Police.

Initially the driver disarmed his assailant in a brief struggle. After the assailant exited the cab, the driver locked the doors and called police.

Culberson was arrested minutes later.
