The Department of Defense released details Wednesday of the death Saturday of a decorated Fort Carson soldier in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Spec. Darrell L. Fernandez, 25, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., died of injuries from a rollover vehicle crash, according to the military.

Fernandez worked as a mechanic with the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment.

The circumstances are still under investigation, according to the Defense Department.

Fernandez was serving his second tour in Iraq since joining the Army in July 2002. He previously served there from March 2005 to February 2006. His second tour began in September.

He was Fort Carson’s 249th casualty since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.

As of Wednesday, at least 4,237 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

At least 3,406 military personnel have died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.
