The Department of Defense released details Wednesday on the death Saturday of a decorated Fort Carson soldier in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Spec. Darrell L. Fernandez, 25, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., died from his injuries in a rollover vehicle crash, according to the military.

Fernandez worked as a mechanic with the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment.

The circumstances are still under investigation, according to the Defense Department.

Fernandez was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq since joining the Army in July 2002. He previously served there from March 2005 to February 2006. His current tour began in September.

He was Fort Carson’s 249th casualty since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.
