Denver Golf Expo benefits youth.
Junior golfers will get special attention at the annual Denver Golf Expo, which begins a three-day run at 10 a.m. today in the Denver Merchandise Mart.
Youths 16-and-under will be admitted free. After participating in the “Colorado Golf Experience” which offers full-swing, chipping and putting lessons, the juniors will receive a gift bag that includes coupons for free rounds of golf (with a paying adult) at 10 par-3 courses along the Front Range.
“As we know, the number of rounds of golf nationally has been flat for a long time, and they’re building more courses everywhere,” Denver Golf Expo manager Mark Cramer said. “So the lifeblood of the industry is in developing new golfers. We want to help.”
Despite the economy, this year’s expo has attracted a record 150 exhibitors manning 250 booths, providing discounted greens fees, golf equipment and apparel. Game-improvement seminars are scheduled throughout the three days.
Also, the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy that goes to the winner of the annual Senior PGA Championship will be on display. The 71st Senior PGA Championship will be held May 25-30, 2010, at Colorado Golf Club in Parker.
Expo hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors.

Hall receives deferred sentence.
Freeskiing star Tanner Hall has been given a six-month deferred sentence after pleading guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hall, 25, of Kalispell, Mont., entered his plea Thursday in Boulder County Court.
Carolyn French, a spokeswoman for the Boulder County district attorney’s office, says the plea agreement also calls for 16 hours of community service and payment of court costs. Hall was cited Dec. 11 after police spotted a group of people doing ski stunts outside New Vista High School in Boulder.
