Colorado State women’s basketball coach Kristen Holt was given a four-year extension through 2013 after taking over this season’s team on a one-year basis.
The Rams are 7-14, 2-6 in the Mountain West, a game out of sixth place. While nowhere close to the success CSU enjoyed in women’s basketball through 2002 under Tom Collen, Holt has done a remarkable job changing the culture.
The last two years under ex-coach Jen Warden saw nonstop turmoil and player attrition, culminating in last season’s 4-28, 0-16 records.
CSU athletic director Paul Kowalczyk hinted at some long-needed stability in the women’s basketball program this week. With three coaching changes in less than two years and a scare over losing volleyball coach Tom Hilbert, Kowalczyk wasn’t eager for another coaching search.
“She can teach, coach, recruit, manage, mentor and lead,” Kowalczyk said in a statement.
Most helpful, the announcement allows Holt to tell recruits she is on a long-term contract.
