John Common (center) led a stellar singer-songwriter lineup at the Ubisububi Room on Saturday. Photos by .

If you need a peaceful evening or just want to “escape,” come hide out
in one of Denver’s most unique basement venues, the Ubisububi Room. It’s just below the venerable Thin Man bar and next door to St. Mark’s coffee house at 17th and Race Streets. Think of it as the high mass of singer-songwriter haven, or perhaps a speakeasy, known only to a handful with knowledge of “the entrance”, and the “secret code” to gain admission. The show there on Saturday was at at its cozy, 35 or so seat capacity.

Common fits in perfectly, since the little-known place has some of the
most special lineups, (in the singer-songwriter vein) a fan could hope for. This is exactly what happened last Saturday: opened the night with her dreamlike songs. I underestimated her ability to wrench my soul with her drifting, “in the clouds” music and now have become a worshipper of her music. Britt sings as if an angel. Her guitar is played as if it is truly a harp.

played second and only two songs into his set I realized how important it was to hear him play with a seated crowd in total silence. Poetic genius!

John Common ended the evening with his guitar and keys, with the beautiful
Jess De Nicola’s vocal accompanyment having the effect of softening
his music in the most pleasant of ways. Wes Michaels on cello and sax
and Jed Marrs on harmonica and keys, rounded this set to PERFECTION.

Ubi Room–the secret you almost don’t want to tell ANYONE about!
