Team captain Gavin Prout scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter to help the Colorado Mammoth pull away from Minnesota for a 13-8 National Lacrosse League victory Saturday in St. Paul, Minn.

The Mammoth was tied 8-8 when newcomer Gary Rosyski scored, followed by two goals from Prout. In his second consecutive start, Andrew Leyshon made 41 saves and helped the defense kill four of five penalties in the second straight win for the Mammoth (3-2).

Prout also made three assists and finished with a game-high six points. Brian Langtry contributed two goals and four assists. Rosyski and Jamie Shewchuk each produced two goals and two assists.

DU’s Morton honored.
has named University of Denver senior midfielder Karen Morton to its preseason All-America lacrosse team. Morton is one of 20 players on the preseason team. The Pioneers, ranked No. 19, open their home schedule Friday against No. 3 Duke.

Hill Climb getting ready.

Racers have begun registering for the 87th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, including some former champions who will make another go up the 14,110-foot peak July 19.

Mike Ell of Raymore, Mo., a 2007 champion and 2008 runner-up, has entered his Yamaha Banshee in the motorcycle quad 500 class to seek the top spot in the rarified air on Pikes Peak. Also back in the quad 500 class are James Vidmar of Colorado Springs and Mike Tollet of Cañon City, who finished third and fourth, respectively, last year.

Eddie Mulder of Littlerock, Calif., the Hill Climb’s 2008 vintage motorcycle winner, will be back as well as 2008 super stock car winner Clint Vahsholtz of Woodland Park, who needs three victories to break the Hill Climb record of 18 held by his father, Leonard.

Barbarians to play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City will transform from a soccer stadium to a rugby pitch when the Denver Barbarians play the Chicago Lions on April 4 in the first rugby game at the $131 million facility.

Dick’s, with a capacity of 18,086 seats, will be the largest venue to host a Rugby Super League match. Two matches will precede the Barbarians-Lions match at 4 p.m. Denver East meets Chaparral at 12:30 p.m., followed by the University of Colorado Rugby Club vs. the Barbarians Division II side at 2 p.m.
