A fire in rural Jefferson County destroyed a mountain home occupied by six people and two German shepherds Sunday night.
No one was injured in the blaze, but the home was a total loss, said Jody Wagner, a spokeswoman for the Elk Creek Fire Protection District.
The blaze in the 31000 block of Shadow Mountain Drive, northwest of Conifer, was reported at 7:22 p.m., but because of its rural location, it took fire crews nearly an hour to fetch water from a pond to extinguish the blaze, Wagner said.
Crews were able to protect nearby woods and homes from the flames, Wagner said.
The Mile High chapter of the American Red Cross found a place for the three adults, three children and their dogs, a spokeswoman said. Their names were not available Sunday evening.
