ST. LOUIS — A test to identify the complex differences in breast tumors could be available this year to help doctors better understand how to treat their patients, researchers at Washington University said Monday.

Researchers developed the test by looking at 50 genes in 1,000 tumors to group the cancers into four known types. The research moves forward the idea that breast tumors behave differently. Some cancers respond better to chemotherapy than others, so the test can help patients avoid unnecessary treatments.
