GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Grand Junction Mayor Gregg Palmer told interviewers on CNBC that the city’s economic successes during the recession are owed to diversification.
Grand Junction was featured on the cable and satellite television network’s “Squawk the Street” program Monday, as an example of a community that is weathering the national economic downturn better than most.
Palmer says the western Colorado city still is somewhat dependent on the energy industry, but has been through enough booms and busts to learn “not to put all our eggs in one basket.”
He says the area’s wineries and tourism industry are two examples of Grand Junction’s move to a more diversified economy, which led in part to a 7 percent increase in tax revenues last year.
