AURORA, Colo.—Opening statements are expected Tuesday afternoon in the trial of a man accused in a 2007 shooting death in Aurora.

Authorities allege Ashton Steel of Aurora shot Eric Andre Preston on Sept. 18, 2007, in a drug deal gone bad.

Police arrested Steel that night on suspicion of first-degree murder and booked him into the Arapahoe County Jail. He has been held without bond since his arrest.

Court records say Steel told police after his arrest that he planned to sell Preston 21 pounds of marijuana.

Authorities say Steel met Preston on the night of the shooting near East Jewell Avenue and South Sable Boulevard, and got into a vehicle with him. Police say gunfire erupted soon after.
