Antonio Margarito‘s boxing license was revoked for at least one year Tuesday by the California State Athletic Commission for the illegal wraps discovered on the former welterweight champion’s hands before his loss last month to Sugar Shane Mosley.
The commission’s decision effectively bans Margarito, a California- born fighter who lives in Mexico, from boxing in the U.S., because other states generally uphold such suspensions under federal law.
Margarito’s trainer, Javier Capetillo, also lost his license for at least one year despite claiming he made an innocent mistake while wrapping Margarito’s hands.
A few minutes before Margarito entered the ring in Los Angeles on Jan. 24, officials discovered the plaster-like substance when Mosley’s trainer ordered Margarito’s hands to be unwrapped.
Bruins lose Ryder to injury
BOSTON — The Boston Bruins will be without forward Michael Ryder for up to three weeks as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken orbital bone between his eyes.
• Left wing Sean Avery is resuming his hockey career with the New York Rangers’ affiliate in Hartford, Conn., after the Dallas Stars assigned him to the American Hockey League team. For Avery to return to the NHL, the Stars would have to recall him from Hartford and he would then have to pass through re-entry waivers.
• St. Louis Blues forward Paul Kariya underwent surgery on his right hip a little more than a month after an operation to fix his left hip. He is likely out for the season.
• Edmonton Oilers defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this week.
Brand facing six months of rehab
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia 76ers forward Elton Brand will need six months of recovery on his surgically repaired right shoulder and should be ready for the start of the 2009-10 season.
• Pistons guard Allen Iverson missed Detroit’s game at Chicago because of flulike symptoms.
• Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Mo Williams was added to the all-star roster as a replacement for injured Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh (knee).
