CANON CITY, Colo.—Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman says a man who died after commandeering a trash truck and leading authorities on a 31-mile chase had a lethal level of cocaine in his system.

Twenty-nine-year-old Philip Munos reportedly walked away from a halfway house in Colorado Springs, where he took his girlfriend’s vehicle and drove to Pueblo.

District Attorney Thom LeDoux has said the chase began early Saturday after officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a Pueblo store.

He says Munos took control of a trash truck and drove to Florence on U.S. 50. The chase ended after Munos drove into a car wash building.

LeDoux says stun guns were used to try to subdue Munos, who developed medical issues shortly after he was taken into custody and died at a Canon City hospital.

An investigation is under way.
