It’s going to cost 2 cents more to mail a letter beginning May 11.

The price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44 cents from 42 cents, the U.S. Postal Service said on its Web site today. There will be no change in the current price of 17 cents for each additional ounce.

Other mailing costs will increase, including services such as certified mail and insurance, the service said. The Postal Service said the increases are at or below the inflation rate.

Postmaster General John Potter last month asked Congress to let the Postal Service reduce its six-days-a-week schedule by one day because of a decline in mail delivery.
