I can count on one hand the number of shows I’ve been to where the opening band was truly embraced by the audience — or even outshined the main act. Denver band fit that mold on Friday night as the first opener.

Their personality and rawk prowess pulled people in. You could actually see it happening as those at the bar gravitated towards the stage. The Rouge showcased songs off their new EP, “Heat & Light,” set to be released within the month. (Their current “Summer Voices EP” is available for free download on their page.)

Following the Rouge, Denver band brought a high energy to the stage. Their dynamics ranged to extremes within each song, and they’ve achieved this mellow/intense interplay with ease.

Curious Yellow closed the night by bringing the audience down to a relaxed level. Fronted by own Adam Lancaster, Curious Yellow reunited for their first show in more than three years. The five-piece includes new additions and members of the Still City. From what I heard Friday night, I anticipate the melodic indie rock band’s return to the Denver scene to be long-lasting.
