FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Loren and Bonnie Brandon had the fastest times in two preliminary races Friday to help Cherry Creek High School to a strong first-day showing at the Class 5A state high school girls’ swimming and diving championships.

The Bruins had the best marks in four of the 11 swimming events.

No team scores were kept, and the top eight finishers in each event advanced to Saturday’s championship finals at Edora Pool Ice Center.

Loren Brandon set the pace in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4 minutes, 55.91 seconds, and sister Bonnie was the top qualifier in the 100 backstroke (56.10).

Cherry Creek’s other top qualifiers were Jordan Mattern in the 200 free and 400 free relay team.

Regis’ Jenna Gregoire had the fastest times in the 50 and 100 frees.
