Lindsey Vonn’s courageous attempt to race in today’s slalom at the world alpine championships, four days after surgery to repair a torn tendon in her right thumb, ended when she fell near the beginning of the second run.
Vonn, who put herself in medal contention with the second-fastest time in the first run, slid out of the course. She ends the world championships with four career medals, tied with Tamara McKinney for the most by an American woman.
She now returns to the World Cup, where she has a 179-point lead over Germany’s Maria Riesch in the overall standings and is aiming to become the first American woman to win two World Cup overall titles.
Her next stop is Tarvisio, Italy, where a super-combined, downhill and super-G will be held next Friday through Sunday.
