BRANSON, Colo.—The Colorado State Patrol says the driver of an SUV was speeding and may have been distracted while reaching for his cell phone when he hit a post and his vehicle rolled, killing his 9-year-old son.
The State Patrol says 40-year-old Michael Richardson was driving in excess of the 65 mph when the accident happened Sunday morning in Branson, near the New Mexico border in southeastern Colorado.
Accident investigators say Richardson’s SUV went into a ditch after hitting a post and rolling once. The State Patrol says Christian Richardson was ejected from the car and died at the scene. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
Richardson’s two other children, ages 8 and 14, survived.
The patrol previously said everyone in the vehicle was wearing seat belts.
