An apartment fire displaced people in about 12 other apartments in the 10000 block of East Dartmouth Avenue in Denver on Sunday afternoon.

The cause of the late-afternoon blaze is still under investigation. It began in one apartment and spread into a hallway when the residents escaped, said Denver Assistant Fire Chief Steve Garrod.

The damage to the apartment was done mostly by smoke, but the other apartments were evacuated for a few more hours because electricity to the building was cut off, Garrod said.
