DENVER—Relatives of a man shot and killed by Denver Police at a communion party for his daughter last spring say they’re planning to sue the department.

Odiceo Valencia was shot and killed at his home in May after police were called to the party. The 45-year-old man allegedly charged at officers with a knife. Officers tried to subdue him with a Taser and non-lethal pellets before firing the fatal shots.

A family attorney tells The Denver Post that Valencia dropped the knife before he was shot.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey concluded that the patrolmen did everything possible to avoid the shooting.
