CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Police were on alert Wednesday after several signs appeared across this violent border city warning that more officers would be killed unless the police chief resigns, a day after his second-in-command and three other officers were slain.

Meanwhile, coroners conducted autopsies on the bodies of the four officers, including the city police chief’s right-hand man, Sacramento Perez, the operations director for the 1,700-member force.

Gunmen ambushed the officers Tuesday afternoon while they were sitting in their patrol car on a street near the U.S. consulate. No arrests have been made.

About 50 police officers have been killed in the past year in attacks blamed on drug gangs trying to consolidate territory.
